NO MORE STROKES!

Fatty deposits caused by atherosclerosis can clog the carotid and vertebral arteries that carry blood from the heart to the brain, and if these blockages go untreated they can cause a stroke. If your doctor believes you’re at risk for vascular disease, he or she may recommend a test that shows how blood is flowing through the vessels. One of the easiest tests is an ultrasound, and with these sound waves any narrowing of the arteries in the neck is easy to see (interesting, isn’t it, that we can see through sound?). Should your doctor be concerned about a blockage located high in the neck or in the brain, he or she may order an MRI or an angiogram. Both tests are good, but there is nothing better than never needing them. The biggest secrets for getting out of these tests are also the most boring. We all know that we should eat healthy foods, exercise on a routine basis, and not smoke. But that’s only the beginning. Sometimes we might have to take medication and watch other aspects of our lifestyle. Heavy drinking, for example, raises the risk of stroke and high blood pressure, too. Although a certain amount of alcohol may help prevent cardiovascular disease, more than one or two drinks a day is health-risky.
